Nattokinase

Nattokinase Side Effects

For 20 years now Nattokinase has been used as a supplement with no side effects. There are no known Nattokinase side effects that some of the other pharmaceutical agents such as Warafin, Herapin and t-PA have shown when used to restrict the clotting of blood.  Nothing has been reported in any of the medical journals or other medical literature about Nattokinsae side effects when used without any other anticoagulants. There is not any known evidence that it has caused any allergic reactions or toxicity with Nattokinase supplements.  But we cannot take for granted that Nattokinsae is side effect free.  It is too early to tell if Nattokinase enzyme treatment is totally free of side effects as there have not been sufficient human trails to know for certain.   It is necessary to talk to your doctor before using Nattokinase supplement as it is a blood thinner and if you are taking some other medications especially coumadin, aspirin, warfarin or any other anticoagulant you could cause a bleeding risk to your body.

There is a report of a cerebellar hemorrhage caused by using nattokinase and aspirin in a patient with cerebral microbleeds. According to Intern Med. March 3, 2008..Department of Neurology, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital-Kaohsiung Medical Center, Chang Gung University College of Medicine, Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The patient in this report had been using aspirin as a way to prevent secondary stroke.  This patient also had an acute cerebellar hemorrhage while on nattokinase. The regiment given to this patient was 400 mg each day for seven days in a row.  Also, besides the lesion, there were many microbleeds found on MR images. The results of this then suggested that nattokinase could very well bring about more of a risk of intracerebral hemorrhages in patients that are known to be bleeders due to cerebral microangiopathy, and those that get other antithrombotic medicines at the same time.

There have not been enough tests to know if there are no Nattokinase side effect but from information available taking two doses of Nattokinase (Flite Tabs) seems to be safe but not enough information is available at the moment to know how safe it would be to take more.

But do not take Nattokinase if you are:

•    pregnant or breast-feeding.
•    due to have surgery in the next two weeks.
•    Because Nattokinase might increase the risk of bleeding.
